Discover the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook
There are places you visit because they’re on a map.
Then there are places you discover because they leave a lasting impression.
The Timber Valley Railroad Overlook is one of those special places.
Perched approximately 60 feet above the CSX railroad tracks, the overlook offers guests a peaceful place to enjoy rolling countryside, passing trains, incredible sunsets, abundant wildlife, and one of the most scenic views found anywhere on our 100-acre property.
Long before it became known as the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook, Karen and I would hear the distant whistle of an approaching train while exploring the trails behind our home. Curious to see where the sound was coming from, we would make our way through the brush until the landscape suddenly opened before us. Below, a CSX train would wind its way through the valley while a gentle breeze followed behind it.
It quickly became one of our favorite places on the farm.
Today, the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook has become a highlight of every Bobcat tour and one of the favorite stops along the Little Trailblazer route. Guests often pause here to admire the view, watch trains pass through the valley, photograph the changing seasons, and simply enjoy a peaceful moment surrounded by nature.
Behind the overlook, a beautiful field of native Big Bluestem warm-season grasses creates an ever-changing backdrop throughout the year. In summer, the grasses sway in the breeze with lush green color. As autumn arrives, the field transforms into brilliant shades of gold and red while also providing valuable habitat for deer, rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs, raccoons, Red-tailed Hawks, and many other species of wildlife that call Timber Valley home.
Whether you’re visiting Timber Valley Farm Barn Rental for a wedding or special event, or enjoying the property during a private tour, the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook offers another opportunity to slow down, appreciate the beauty around you, and discover why so many guests fall in love with Timber Valley.
Let’s explore seven reasons why the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook has become one of the signature destinations in our Discover Timber Valley series.
Reason #1: Every Great View Has a Story
Every memorable place has a story, and the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook is no exception.
Long before it became one of the favorite stops for our guests, it was simply a place Karen and I discovered together while exploring the trails behind our home. Whenever we heard the distant whistle of a train echo through the valley, our curiosity would get the best of us. We would leave the trail, carefully work our way through the brush, and suddenly the landscape would open before us.
There it was.
A breathtaking view overlooking the CSX railroad nearly 60 feet below, surrounded by rolling countryside, towering trees, and peaceful farmland stretching into the distance. We would stop whatever we were doing, watch the train make its way through the valley, and enjoy the quiet beauty that surrounded us.
Those simple moments became some of our favorites.
As Timber Valley continued to grow, we knew this special place couldn’t remain our secret. We wanted our guests to experience the same excitement we felt every time a train rounded the bend, the same peaceful scenery that invited us to pause, and the same sense of discovery that made us fall in love with this overlook years ago.
Today, the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook has become one of the signature destinations along the Little Trailblazer route and a highlight of every Bobcat tour. Guests often find themselves doing exactly what we did years ago—stopping for a few extra minutes to admire the view, listen for an approaching train, take photographs, and simply enjoy being surrounded by nature.
Some of the best places are never planned.

They’re discovered.
And we’re honored to share one of our favorite discoveries with every guest who visits Timber Valley.
Reason #2: Watch a CSX Train Roll Through the Valley
There’s something unforgettable about hearing the distant sound of a train whistle echo through the countryside.
It begins quietly. The whistle carries across the valley long before the train comes into view, building anticipation with every passing second. Guests often pause their conversations, look toward the tracks below, and wait for the moment when a CSX train rounds the bend and begins its journey through the landscape.
From approximately 60 feet above the railroad, the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook provides a unique perspective that few people ever experience. Looking down from the overlook, you can watch the powerful locomotives lead a line of freight cars through the valley while enjoying an unobstructed view of the surrounding countryside.
As the train passes beneath the overlook, you’ll not only see its impressive size—you’ll also feel it. The movement of the train creates a gentle breeze that reaches the overlook, adding another dimension to the experience. It’s one of those unexpected moments that guests often remember long after they’ve returned home.
On average, 10 to 12 CSX trains travel this section of track each day, although the number can vary depending on railroad operations and maintenance schedules. Because every train is different, no two visits are ever exactly the same. Some trains seem to stretch endlessly through the valley, while others pass quickly, leaving behind only the fading sound of steel wheels and the distant whistle.
For children, it’s an exciting adventure.
For train enthusiasts, it’s a chance to watch one of America’s busiest freight railroads from a remarkable vantage point.
For photographers, it’s an opportunity to capture a unique combination of trains, rolling farmland, and beautiful natural scenery.
And for everyone else, it’s simply another reason to pause, smile, and appreciate one of the many memorable experiences waiting to be discovered at Timber Valley.
Sometimes the best memories are the ones you never expected—and watching a train roll through the valley from the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook is one of those moments.
Reason #3: One of the Best Views at Timber Valley
Some views encourage you to keep moving.
Others invite you to stop, take a deep breath, and simply enjoy the moment.
The Timber Valley Railroad Overlook is one of those places.
From this elevated vantage point, guests can look across rolling farmland, wooded hillsides, and the beautiful valley below. The scenery changes with the weather, the seasons, and even the time of day, making every visit a little different from the last.
On clear days, the view seems to stretch for miles across the western Maryland countryside. Soft breezes ripple through the native grasses while birds soar overhead. During the evening, the setting sun paints the landscape with warm shades of gold, orange, and crimson, creating one of the most peaceful places on the property to end the day.

The overlook isn’t just about what you see—it’s about what you experience.
You may hear the rustling of the Big Bluestem grasses as the wind passes through them. You might catch sight of a Red-tailed Hawk circling overhead or a family of deer quietly moving along the edge of the woods. Every visit offers something different, encouraging guests to slow down and appreciate the beauty that surrounds them.
For many couples, the overlook has also become a favorite location for photographs. The open views, natural landscape, and changing seasonal colors provide a beautiful backdrop for engagement sessions, wedding portraits, and family photographs. Every image captured here tells a story, framed by one of the most scenic locations at Timber Valley.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning for another adventure, the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook reminds us that some of life’s greatest moments don’t require a schedule or an itinerary.
Sometimes all you need is a beautiful view, a peaceful place to stand, and a few quiet minutes to appreciate God’s creation.
That’s what makes the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook one of the most memorable stops in our Discover Timber Valley series.
Reason #4: A Landscape That Changes With Every Season
One of the most remarkable things about the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook is that no two visits are ever quite the same.
As the seasons change, so does the landscape surrounding the overlook, creating a completely different experience throughout the year.
Spring brings fresh green leaves to the surrounding trees and new life to the valley below. Wildflowers begin to bloom, birds fill the air with song, and wildlife becomes more active as the countryside awakens after winter.
Summer transforms the overlook into a peaceful retreat. Behind the overlook, the beautiful field of native Big Bluestem warm-season grasses reaches its full height, gently swaying with every passing breeze. The lush green grasses not only create a stunning backdrop for photographs, but they also provide valuable cover and habitat for many of the wildlife species that call Timber Valley home.
As autumn arrives, the Railroad Overlook becomes one of the most colorful places on the property. The Big Bluestem grasses change from green to breathtaking shades of gold, copper, and deep red, while the surrounding hardwood trees burst into brilliant fall colors. Combined with the rolling countryside and passing CSX trains below, it creates a landscape that guests often describe as picture-perfect.

A quiet glance, a beautiful landscape, and the beginning of forever at the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook.
Even winter has its own quiet beauty. Snow blankets the hillsides, the grasses stand tall against the white landscape, and the peaceful stillness makes every train passing through the valley feel even more dramatic. It’s a completely different experience, yet equally unforgettable.
The Big Bluestem field is more than just beautiful scenery. We intentionally planted these native warm-season grasses to provide a safe habitat for wildlife while helping preserve the natural character of Timber Valley. Throughout the year, deer, rabbits, squirrels, groundhogs, raccoons, Red-tailed Hawks, and many other animals find food, shelter, and protection within this beautiful landscape.
For Karen and me, caring for the land is just as important as sharing it with our guests. We believe the beauty of Timber Valley comes not only from its scenic views but also from the wildlife, native plants, and peaceful natural surroundings that make every visit feel special.
No matter when you visit, the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook offers a new reason to stop, look around, and discover another beautiful chapter in the ever-changing story of Timber Valley.
Reason #5: A Favorite Stop Along the Little Trailblazer
Every great adventure includes a destination that guests remember long after the journey is over.
For many visitors, that destination is the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook.
As part of the Little Trailblazer route, the overlook has become one of the highlights of every Bobcat UTV tour. As we travel the trails together, guests experience the changing landscape of Timber Valley before arriving at one of the highest and most scenic points on the property.
By the time we reach the overlook, conversations often become quieter.
People naturally step out of the Bobcat, walk toward the edge of the overlook, and take in the view stretching across the valley below. Some immediately begin taking photographs. Others simply stand in silence, enjoying the peaceful scenery and listening for the distant sound of an approaching CSX train.
It doesn’t matter if you’re five years old or eighty-five years old.
There’s something about standing high above the railroad, watching the countryside unfold below, that brings out a sense of wonder.
Children become excited when they hear the train whistle in the distance. Adults often find themselves slowing down, appreciating the peaceful surroundings, and remembering a time when life seemed a little less hurried.
The overlook also provides one of the best opportunities to experience the natural beauty that surrounds Timber Valley. Looking behind the overlook, guests can admire the beautiful field of native Big Bluestem grasses. Looking ahead, they can watch trains winding through the valley. Looking around, they are surrounded by rolling farmland, mature woodlands, and the quiet beauty that has made Timber Valley such a special place for our family.
Every Bobcat tour is a little different because nature is always changing.

One of the most memorable moments at the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook is watching a CSX freight train pass through the valley together.
Sometimes guests watch a freight train roll beneath the overlook.
Sometimes they photograph a spectacular sunset.
Sometimes they spot a Red-tailed Hawk soaring overhead or deer quietly feeding near the edge of the woods.
Every visit offers something new to discover.
That’s one of the reasons the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook has become more than just another stop along the Little Trailblazer—it has become one of the experiences guests talk about long after they return home.
Reason #6: Where Wildlife and Nature Come Together
The Timber Valley Railroad Overlook is more than a scenic place to watch trains—it’s also one of the best places on the property to experience the wildlife and natural beauty that make Timber Valley so special.
Behind the overlook, the field of native Big Bluestem warm-season grasses provides an important habitat for many of the animals that live here year-round. We intentionally planted these native grasses not only because of their beautiful seasonal colors, but also because they offer food, shelter, and protection for wildlife.
It’s not unusual to spot White-tailed Deer quietly moving through the grasses during the early morning or evening hours. Rabbits dart along the edge of the field, squirrels climb through the surrounding hardwood trees, and groundhogs occasionally make an appearance as they forage nearby. If you’re especially observant, you may even catch a glimpse of a raccoon making its way toward the woods.
One of our favorite sights is watching a Red-tailed Hawk soaring high above the valley. With its broad wings and keen eyesight, it gracefully circles overhead before gliding across the countryside in search of its next meal. Seeing one against the backdrop of rolling hills and open skies reminds us just how connected this overlook is to the natural world.
The changing seasons bring different wildlife activity throughout the year, making every visit unique. Some days you’ll hear birds singing from the treetops. Other days you may see deer feeding near the edge of the woods while a freight train quietly passes through the valley below. It’s these unexpected moments that often become the memories our guests cherish the most.
Karen and I have always believed that caring for the land is an important part of sharing it. Every tree, every native grass, and every habitat we protect helps preserve the peaceful character of Timber Valley for future generations to enjoy.
When you visit the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook, you’re not simply stopping to admire a beautiful view. You’re stepping into a living landscape where wildlife, native plants, rolling farmland, and the sounds of nature all come together to create an experience that changes with every season and every visit.
It’s another reminder that some of the greatest treasures at Timber Valley aren’t built—they’ve been here all along, just waiting to be discovered.
Reason #7: Another Reason to Discover Timber Valley
The Timber Valley Railroad Overlook is more than just another destination on our property—it’s another chapter in the story of Timber Valley.
Every overlook, trail, woodland path, and scenic view has its own personality. Together, they create a place where families, couples, and friends can slow down, reconnect with one another, and experience the beauty of western Maryland in a way that’s becoming increasingly rare.
The Railroad Overlook perfectly reflects what the Discover Timber Valley series is all about.
It’s not a manufactured attraction.
It’s not something that was built overnight.
It’s a place that was discovered, appreciated, and carefully preserved so others could experience it too.
What began as one of Karen’s and my favorite places to watch a passing train has grown into one of the highlights of every Bobcat tour. Today, guests often find themselves smiling as they listen for the distant whistle of a CSX train, admire the rolling countryside, photograph the changing seasons, and watch wildlife moving through the Big Bluestem grasses.
Some visitors remember the excitement of seeing a freight train pass beneath them.
Others remember the brilliant colors of an autumn sunset.

Some treasure the peaceful silence between passing trains, while others leave talking about the deer, hawks, or rabbits they spotted along the way.
Every guest experiences the Timber Valley Railroad Overlook a little differently, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
