What began as a simple request from a friend eventually became one of the most meaningful projects we’ve ever completed at Timber Valley Farm Barn Rental. It wasn’t just about installing an old iron gate. It was about watching one piece after another fall into place until a once-forgotten gate finally found the home it had been waiting for all along.

Today, every guest who walks through that gate begins a journey into one of the most peaceful places on our farm. Before they experience the towering moss-covered boulders, the quiet woodland, and the beauty of God’s Cathedral Maryland, they first pass through a gate with a story of its own.

More than 15 years ago, a friend of ours was selling his home and asked if we could store an old iron gate for him in case he ever needed it again.

Of course, we said yes.

As the years passed, the gate quietly became part of the farm. It wasn’t something we used or even thought much about. In time, I honestly forgot where it had been stored.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, something unexpected happened.

I felt God putting it on my heart to place a gate at the entrance to God’s Cathedral.

The thought seemed to come out of nowhere. I had never planned to install a gate there, and until that moment, it had never crossed my mind.

The only problem was that I didn’t even know where the old gate was anymore.

What happened next is something I’ll never forget.

Looking for a Gate I Could No Longer Find

For several days, I wondered where that old iron gate had ended up. I searched my memory, trying to remember where we had stored it all those years ago, but nothing came to mind.

During that same week, I was cleaning up along the old railroad tracks on the farm when I noticed an old piece of pipe lying on the ground. I picked it up, thinking it might be useful someday, and set it aside.

At one point, I even considered building a wooden gate if I couldn’t find the original iron one. The more I thought about it, the more I realized it just didn’t feel right for God’s Cathedral. The natural beauty of that special place seemed to call for something different.

Then Saturday morning arrived.

I decided to check one more place where I thought the old gate might be stored.

To my surprise, there it was.

After more than 15 years, the once-forgotten gate had been waiting there all along.

Everything Began to Fall Into Place

That Saturday, our grandnephew, Gage, came to help at the farm. Together, we loaded the Once-Forgotten Gate to God’s Cathedral and began figuring out how we could install it.

The gate still had its original support post attached, but the bottom of the square tubing was packed solid with dirt. After cleaning it out, I had an idea.

If I could find a smaller diameter pipe that would slide inside the support post, it just might work.

I remembered a piece of pipe I kept in the shop. I used it as an extension on the handle of a ratchet whenever I needed extra leverage to loosen a stubborn bolt.

I tried it.

It fit perfectly.

Then I realized I would need another piece of pipe to replace it in my toolbox. That’s when I remembered the old pipe I had picked up along the railroad tracks just a few days earlier.

It was exactly what I needed.

With the gate, the pipe, and our tools loaded into the Bobcat, Gage and I headed toward God’s Cathedral.

The next question was simple.

Where should the gate go?

The Perfect Place Had Been Waiting All Along

When we arrived at God’s Cathedral, our first thought was to install the gate at the wider entrance. It seemed like the obvious place.

But the more we looked at it, the more we realized it just didn’t look right.

So Gage and I carried the gate farther into God’s Cathedral until we reached the narrow passage between the towering moss-covered boulders.

The moment we held it in place, we knew.

It looked as though it had always belonged there.

Now we just needed to see if we could make it work.

We chose a spot where we hoped the support pipe would slide into the ground. As we carefully drove it in, we waited to hit solid rock. Surrounded by massive boulders, it seemed almost certain we would.

But we didn’t.

The pipe went into the ground without striking a single rock or obstruction.

We lowered the gate onto the support pipe, made a few small adjustments at the base, and watched everything come together. One of the moss-covered boulders naturally stopped the gate from swinging too far, as if it had been designed for that very purpose.

Projects don’t usually come together this easily.

This one did. The Once-Forgotten Gate to God’s Cathedral had finally found the place where it belonged.

Before we installed the Forgotten Gate to God’s Cathedral, I thought about painting it.

In the end, I decided not to.

I didn’t want it to look brand new or draw attention to itself. I wanted it to feel as though it had always been part of God’s Cathedral Maryland.

Over time, nature will continue to do what it does best. The gate will weather, blend even more into the landscape, and quietly welcome guests without taking away from the beauty surrounding it.

When guests visit Timber Valley Farm Barn Rental, my hope is that they notice the peaceful woodland, the towering moss-covered boulders, and the quiet beauty of God’s Cathedral Maryland long before they notice the gate itself.

Sometimes the best additions aren’t the ones that stand out.

They’re the ones that simply belong.
